A fraction refers to certain portions of a whole size. The word fraction has its origin from the Latin word “fractus” which means ‘to break’. We use fractions in our daily lives in various situations to describe the number of equal parts in which an object is broken into. For example, if we divide a pizza into equal portions and consume three portions out of it, we have consumed the three-fourth portion of the pizza.
A fraction is denoted by a numerical value for mathematical calculations. The numerical expression of a fraction is denoted as the ratio of two numbers. The upper part denotes how many portions of the whole are being referred to. It is called the numerator. The lower portion denotes how many equal parts the whole has been divided into. It is called the denominator.
For example, an object is divided into 10 equal parts. Then the 7 parts of it will be represented by the fraction 7/10. Here 7 is the numerator and 10 is the denominator.
A proper fraction denotes portions that are less than the whole part. The numerator of the proper fraction is always less than the denominator (example, 2/5, 1/8)
Sometimes fractions are used to express a whole part plus a portion of another whole. This is called a mixed fraction. The mixed fraction can also be represented as an improper fraction where the numerator is more than the denominator (example, 12/7, 9/4)
A unit fraction denotes only a single part of all the equal parts of a whole thing, and it has 1 as its numerator (example, 1/3, 1/12)
Two fractions are called equivalent fractions when they denote the same portion of a whole but are expressed differently. When both numerator and denominator of a fraction are multiplied or divided by the same number it gives equivalent fractions (example 2/5 and 14/35)
